Activity: find the sickle-cell variant

Sickle-cell disease is caused by one base change in the β-globin gene, HBB: NM_000518.5:c.20A>T, which changes glutamate to valine.

  1. Type HBB in the search box above the tracks and press Enter.
  2. Zoom in until you can read single DNA letters (less than 150 bases across).
  3. In the Teaching variants track, click the variant that causes sickle-cell disease.
  4. Which person has two copies of the sickle-cell allele? Click their genotype under that variant.
